Eighteen tundra buggies are licensed to traverse a 10-square-mile area in search polar bears. Bear sightings spark traffic jams. About 10,000 tourists venture to remote Churchill, Manitoba in October and November to view polar bears. The bears, who come ashore in July when the ice on the bay breaks up, experience a "walking hibernation" in the warm months. As temperatures cool, they again make their way to Hudson Bay, where they spend the winter and spring feeding primarily on ringed seals. The bears around Churchill represent the world's southernmost population. But global warming is threatening their habitat and numbers have dropped in the past decade. Average weight is down and mortality rates of young bears has risen. (Jayne Clark, USA TODAY) (Via MerlinFTP Drop) (Newscom TagID: usatphotos019747) [Photo via Newscom]
